Which Crops to Grow on Flood-Prone or Waterlogged Land

Start with the water, not the crop

Before picking a crop, understand the water. How long does water actually stand after rain — hours, days, or weeks? Is it seasonal flooding along a river or canal, or year-round waterlogging from poor drainage? A field that drains in a day is a very different problem from one that stays submerged for a week, and the right crop depends entirely on that answer.

The goal is to match a crop's tolerance for standing water and low-oxygen roots to how wet your land really gets. Get that match right and wet land becomes an asset rather than a loss.

Rice (paddy) is the classic flood-tolerant choice

Rice is the go-to crop for land that holds water, because it is adapted to grow in flooded, low-oxygen soil where most other crops would drown. For most farmers with a wet field, paddy is the safest starting point.

If your land is prone to deeper or longer flooding, ask specifically about deepwater rice and submergence-tolerant varieties — these are bred to survive being fully underwater for a period and then recover. Availability of these varieties differs by state and season, so confirm what is offered locally.

Other water-loving options

Beyond rice, several crops do well on wet ground. Jute is a traditional fibre crop for low-lying, moisture-rich land. Taro (arbi/colocasia) tolerates wet soils. In parts of India, water-based crops like water chestnut (singhara) and makhana (foxnut) are grown deliberately in ponded fields, turning standing water into a cash crop.

On land that is only partially or seasonally wet, certain fodder grasses and, in some conditions, sugarcane can work once basic drainage is in place. The right pick depends on your soil, climate and market — there is no single answer for every wet field.

Practices that reduce flood risk

The crop is only half the solution; managing the water is the other half. Raised beds and bunds lift roots above standing water. Simple drainage channels move excess water off the field faster. Choosing short-duration varieties and timing sowing to avoid the peak flood window can let you harvest before the worst water arrives.

Small, low-cost changes to how water enters and leaves the field often make more difference than the crop choice alone.
